The cost of Java spirit is accurately calculated to seventy-nine cents and sixty-eight hundredths of a cent ($0.7968) per gallon for Teng-hari, and fifty-one cents and thirty-six hundredths of a cent ($0.5136) per gallon for Siangles, whereas Kat... 199 hundred and twenty flowers for four gallons, which is equivalent to about forty cents a gallon.
Sir G. Bowen states in his despatch to the Colonial Office that the cost of Chinese spirit exported from Hong Kong ranges from thirty to forty cents a gallon, and it is evident therefore that there is no likelihood, under the present scheme, of the Java product being able to compete with Chinese spirits, as it will be subject to a much higher duty.
